Innovation & Technology Department

Develops and reviews National Aquaculture policies, strategies, plans and regulations and Promotes the development and introduction of appropriate technologies innovations and management practices in aquaculture.

Functions

(i) Develop and review National Aquaculture policies, strategies, plans and regulations

(ii) Promote development and introduction of appropriate technologies innovations and

management practices in aquaculture

(iii) Coordinates incubation and validation of appropriate technologies in aquaculture;

(iv) Promote sustainable aquaculture in appropriate zones

(v) Replenish natural habitats through diversification in liaison with capture fisheries

(vi) Develop standards for the management of all aquaculture activities

(vii) Promote Development of Aquaculture Enterprises

(viii) Fish disease surveillance

(ix) Provide Advisory and Training Services for Technical Officers and other relevant

stakeholders

(x) Promote Public Private Partnership in commercial Aquaculture;

(xi) Collect, analyze and disseminate aquaculture information and

(xii) Prepare national aquaculture reports.

Farming of Tilapia in ponds

Tilapia is a general name of a group of cichlids endemic to Africa. All tilapia species are nest builders; fertilized eggs are guarded in the nest by a brood parent. The genera Sarotherodon and Oreochromis are mouth brooders; eggs are fertilized in the nest but parents incubate them in their mouths.
